Note 002: The Wandering Atlas

The art of travel.

Traveling transforms you. It transports you beyond your everyday reality, allowing you to perceive the world through varied lenses and providing experiences that reshape your identity.

In 2016, I received my parents' 2000 Chevy Express van, the last adventure vehicle my dad acquired before he passed. My parents traveled extensively, and I was fortunate to accompany them on many journeys. I recall our conversion van—road trips across Wisconsin, escapes to warmer climates, and countless nights camping under the stars. They instilled a deep appreciation for road travel in me.

Travel has also played a pivotal role in my relationship with my partner, James. Sharing a mere 80 square feet for extended periods compels you to truly understand and cooperate with one another. It's during these adventures that you quickly discern whether a relationship can flourish. Our engagement happened on a road trip in Colorado, amidst a snowy November hike with our dogs. That moment encapsulated everything we are—perfectly us, etched in time and adventure.

This country boasts a stunning array of scenic locations waiting to be explored. We established The Wandering Atlas to share our journey, serve as a travel resource for those in search of adventure, and provide directions to inspire others on their next road trip. By stepping away from the comfort of hotels and restaurants, travelers can discover and experience much more of the world that often goes unnoticed. Living and traveling in a van, immersed in nature, offers a unique sense of connection to the environment and its elements. While it may present challenges, the rewards far exceed those of a typical tourist experience.

This way of travel allows you to witness firsthand what many only see on platforms like National Geographic or the Travel Channel. Slowing down and disconnecting from technology and modern conveniences deepens your appreciation for the journey, leading to unforgettable memories that inspire future adventures. #alwayshaveavacationplanned

To move, to breath, to fly to float,
To roam the roads of lands remote,
To travel is to live.
